The madness around Web APIs seems to have a Viral Nature. See this announcement from programmableweb.com:
This week our API directory crossed another threshold — now with 900 open web service APIs listed. 2008 has been a busy year for new APIs, first averaging 40 APIs per month in Q1 and then up to 60 new web service APIs just last month alone.

Welcome to API Wars. Its nearly impossible to grasp, what all this will lead to. I ask myself if it will create unforeseen loops & chain reactions by interconnecting all those services and than injecting messages & post into it.
As Alex King says in his FAQ of his Wordpress Plugin:
