The madness around Web APIs seems to have a Viral Nature. See this announcement from programmableweb.com:
This week our API directory crossed another threshold — now with 900 open web service APIs listed. 2008 has been a busy year for new APIs, first averaging 40 APIs per month in Q1 and then up to 60 new web service APIs just last month alone.

While working on a new project, I had to do some research about Social Networking Services and their APIs. It is incredible whats going on out there. Every new web service has an API - syndicates stuff from other sites - pushes messages to other services ….
Welcome to API Wars. Its nearly impossible to grasp, what all this will lead to. I ask myself if it will create unforeseen loops & chain reactions by interconnecting all those services and than injecting messages & post into it.
As Alex King says in his FAQ of his Wordpress Plugin:
